ACADEMIA CONTRIBUTING TO EUROPE'S COMPETITIVENESS IN NANOELECTRONICS

Mr Van der PoelWithin EUREKA's cluster programme MEDEA+, scientific routes to future nanoelectronics R&D are closely coupled with industrial needs, prospectives and orientation. The enabling feature, called "MEDEA+ Scientific Committee", represented in the MEDEA+ Board by the committee's chairman, is taking care to link the creativity of the academic/research community in Europe with the needs of Europe-based industry, and to provide guidance in exploratory areas.

The participants of the Scientific Committee are prominent members from major research institutes and universities across Europe. Subject to the specific themes of a year, the composition of participants may vary. The Scientific Committee is not involved in the MEDEA+ labelling and monitoring process at project level, but concentrates on longer term future aspects, such as :

  • Identification of critical issues in the electronic domains within the forthcoming 5 to 10 year,

  • Identification of crucial topics impacting future nanoelectronics development,

  • Technical benchmarking in the domain.

During the update of the MEDEA+ White Book covering phase two (2005-2008), the committee rendered valuable input leading to a variety of new aspects, changes and amendments of MEDEA+ work areas and its strategic perception.

Specific interests and expected benefits for the European industry are drivers for the MEDEA+ Board in tasking the Committee to accomplish every year some executive reports. In the Article adjacent to this letter, the last two executive summaries of 2003-reports are published on "Heterogeneity on Silicon or in a package for future system innovation" and "Development of On-Chip Signal Processing for Audio/Video/User interfaces".

One of the reports for 2004 will be on "bio-chips & chips for bio", covering areas such as in-vitro diagnostics, analytical systems for bio & pharma R&D, medical devices for diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, in total, an area of great interest offering clearly opportunities for the European industry. Before releasing the report, containing also a set of recommendations from the academic community to industry leaders and authorities, a dedicated workshop will be carried out on 4th June 2004. More details can be found under http://www.medeaplus.org/webpublic/events1.htm.

The outstanding contribution, rendered by the MEDEA+ Scientific Committee, is an essential part, that future research and innovation will result in an increased competitiveness of Europe's nanoelectronics industry.
